Dreamer by Ja-Mel Vinson | e-ARC review & Caffeine Book Tours Blogtour

Hello everyone and welcome back to my blog! Today is my stop at the Dreamer Blog Tour hosted by Shealea from Caffeine Book Tours & Shut up Shealea. If you want to know more about this blogtour please read this post by Shealea. And now let us move on to the review.

The day before moving into her new dorm, college freshman, Maya Lilac, has a haunting dream that ends with her coming face-to-face with a second version of herself. After being haunted by the dream during move-in day, she finally comes in contact with her double, nicknamed “Lucent”, and learns that she actually has powers and can—among other things—make her dreams come true.

Maya’s heritage, however, runs deeper when she discovers that she’s the True Dreamer, a person reaching back as far as Joan of Arc that’s tasked with protecting her species, as well as the world, from any and all threats… including her seemingly-peaceful and non-combative double. But, not everyone shares Maya’s vision that her clone isn’t out to harm anybody, especially her mother. As Maya and her mother fight over whether Lucent is a legitimate threat, Maya trains in her now-active powers to fulfill her destiny of protecting the world, whether she has to take care of Lucent or not.

What I liked
The worldbuilding was amazing. It was something new and I am glad that I got to read this book. I liked the fact that it was about dreams that could eventually come true. Or at least in Mayas case they could become true if she wanted them to become true. It was actually quite fascinating but also scary at the same time. You know what I mean, right?
It was something else and that was quite refreshing to be honest.
Another thing I liked were the descriptions of this world. They were pretty detailed which, I have to admit, annoyed me a bit at certain times but when the descriptions were placed at the right parts it wasn’t annoying at all. It helped the reader to understand everything.
And last but not least I found it exciting to read how the heroine of this novel had to juggle her studies with saving the world. Usually in these kind of novels we don’t learn much about the private life of our main characters. They only save the world and have absolutely no other problems or whatsoever. So yeah I found it great and am extremely grateful that the author put these infos in the book itself. I can’t repet myself enough, it was definitely refreshing!

What I didn’t like

It was very short-paced. Most of the time I found myself skimming through the chapter to get to a more interesting part.
The fight scenes weren’t that exciting for me. I wanted to read something with a little bit more action packed but that’s honestly only my opinion.

Favourite Character

No one. I didn’t get attached to the characters.

Overall, if you’re looking for a new kind of fantasy/sci-fi book to read, Dreamer is the one you should read!
